The Type 90 is a Tier 7 special premium Main Battle Tank under Francine De Laroche's dealership.
History[ | ]
Class: Main Battle Tank
Developed: 1976-1990
Service: 1991+
Vehicles Built: 341
Operators: Japan
The development of the tank started in 1976 as a part of the STC program to build a truly modern tank for the Japanese Self-Defense Forces, although shortly afterwards the development program received a different designation, TK-X. Mitsubishi developed the Type 90 MBT as a replacement of the aging Type 61 and Type 74 tanks in order to counter the threat of third generation Soviet Main Battle Tanks such as the T-64A or T-72 MBTs.
The design featured a number of elements new to the Japanese, such as the 120mm smoothbore gun by Rheinmetall or advanced composite armor. This vehicle's Fire Control System was quite advanced for its time but the most distinctive feature of this tank was its hydraulic suspension, allowing it to better fight in Japan's mountainous terrain. All this resulted in protracted development with multiple delays.
The tank entered service in 1991 but with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the subsequent budget cuts, the intended production numbers were reduced further and further, resulting in an extremely high cost per unit and slow production rate in order to maintain the capability to actually build tanks rather than the actual combat need. 341 vehicles were built between 1990 and 2009 before the production was canceled in favor of the Type 10 MBT.
