==History== Class: Main Battle Tank
Developed: 2002-2010
Service: 2012+
Vehicles Built: 111
Operators: Japan The Type 10 MBT, also called Hitomaru (name comes simply from the words “Hito”, meaning one, and “Maru”, meaning zero), was designed in the 2000s to replace the aging Type 74 in Japanese service. Much like with the previous Japanese MBTs, the goal was to produce a machine best suited for the defense of the Japanese isles from a potential invader. The Type 10 MBT is therefore extremely light for its class while maintaining MBT-level protection and features hydraulic adjustable suspension as well as cutting edge electronics. The real ace up its sleeve is, however, its C4I Battlefield Management System. With it, the tank can connect to other tanks or even other unit types. You can already see the pattern emerging with most modern AFVs relying on such systems. They do offer a tremendous advantage and act as force multipliers. The Type 10 MBT is currently still being built but due to the low production rates, it’s currently one of the most expensive fighting vehicles in the world.
