The T-72M4CZ had long been one of the best (and most expensive) T-72 upgrades in the world and was only surpassed by the most recent T-72 upgrades. Its history is rather prosaic and unfortunate since the tank never reached its true potential and, unlike the Polish PT-91, hasn't been a commercial success. But it is a good example of what happened with the former Warsaw Pact militaries after the fall of the Soviet Union.
Its development started after the Desert Storm shock where vast quantities of older Soviet equipment, including T-72M tanks, were destroyed without having a chance to retaliate. The first profs of concept appeared in 1994 while the initial prototype, developed by VOP 025 Nový Jičín, was finished in 1996. This prototype then paved the way to the T-72M4CZ variant that appeared in 1997.
The T-72M4CZ typically consisted of a T-72M1 hull and a T-72M turret, although at least one full T-72M1 conversion exists. The main upgrades of this type were its cutting edge DYNA-72 ERA armor, new Czech APFSDS ammunition, Italian TURMS-T Fire Control System an a new power pack consisting of a British CV12 Condor engine paired with an American transmission. Together, these improvements significantly increased the combat value of the vehicle roughly to that of the 2011 T-72B3 model. However, despite its high quality, only 30 of this type (27 regular tanks and 3 command tanks) were built between 2003 and 2006 due to budgetary constraints.
