The T-64A mod. 1976 is a tier 5 Main Battle Tank originating from the Soviet Union, and is sold by Marat Shishkin. It can be unlocked from the T-64A mod. 1969, and is currently the end of the T-64 branch in Armored Warfare.

As a modernization of the powerful tier 4 variant of the T-64 platform, the T-64A mod. 1976 retains the powerful frontal armor and speed of the mod. 1969, while gaining a more accurate gun, improved mobility, and an armor upgrade which can provide excellent protection against incoming HEAT and ATGM fire. A hybrid brawler and sniper, the T-64A excels at both, being one of the most capable MBTs at its tier.

Upgrade Suggestions[]

Upgrading to the Kontakt-1 ERA package will provide a strong defense against ATGM fire, so it should be unlocked and equipped early. Upgrading the ammunition and researching the Improved Autoloader will heavily increase the effective firepower of the vehicle, so they should be researched sooner rather than later. While the 5TDFM O-P Diesel Engine offers a decent upgrade over the stock engine, the stock engine allows the T-64A to keep up with a battle without too much of a hassle.

The Soviet Union’s attempt to create the most advanced tank of the time, the T-64A uses an early form of composite armor on the upper glacis, with composite inserts in the heavily armored steel turret front. This offers protection against HEAT shells.

This ERA package offers protection to the front and sides of the hull, and the front half of the turret. While Kontakt-1 is an older form of ERA, it still proves effective against HEAT rounds and ATGMs, and also provides marginally better protection against kinetic rounds.

The T-64A Model 1976 variant was the final T-64A production variant. By 1974, the T-64A was deep in production already while being upgraded practically every year with new features, its teething problems resolved one by one – between 1969 and 1973, no fewer than 242 modifications were made on the vehicle, most of them to the engine and the suspension.

From 1974 to 1975, the first major armor upgrade took place when the frontal part of the turret aluminum inlay was replaced by another one, this time made of corundum balls. The automatic loader was upgraded as well and, finally, the tank received a new gun model – the 2A46 gun, an upgraded version of the original 125mm 2A26 smoothbore.

The gun was of the same caliber and barrel length but without the problems that plagued the older model. Specifically, the 2A26 gun barrel was too thin and twisted when exposed to elements, causing the gun lose accuracy. Plus, the recoil mechanism wasn’t well-designed either, its hydraulic fluid mixed with air, causing the gun to recoil incorrectly, further reducing its accuracy. These issues were solved on the 2A46 gun that officially entered service in 1970. The gun was stabilized by a new stabilizer model called 2E28M2 and received a new thermal shroud.

The engine also received some upgrades and became actually capable of running on multiple fuel types. The 1974-1975 upgrades integrated into the 1976 model became the biggest and the only major upgrade to the T-64A while keeping the T-64A designation. The production of the T-64A ran from 1968 to 1980-1981 with the last four years being in parallel with the T-64B model. The T-64A remained in Soviet service until the dissolution of the Soviet Union when the remaining tanks mostly seemed to have ended up in Ukraine. Like the other T-64A models, this tank was never exported and was only passed to the successor countries after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
