The SU-152 Taran, also known under the designation Object 120, was one of the last true Soviet tank destroyers armed with a powerful gun before the entire tank-killing philosophy had shifted towards guided missiles. The development program called Taran was launched in 1957 by the OKB-3 design bureau. The program included two weapon projects - a 130mm rifled gun called M-68 and a 152mm smoothbore gun called M-69. The M-69 was chosen as the better option due to its ability to fire a HEAT round.
A single prototype of the vehicle armed with it was built and tested in 1960, but the project was closed soon after since the development of the 125mm D-81 gun as well as modern guided missiles such as the Malyutka made it obsolete. The prototype currently remains in the Kubinka tank museum.
