The Object 187 was a Soviet era program, developed to improve upon the excellent but ageing T-72B Main Battle Tank. This project was competing against another one called Object 188. Both designs were actually based on the T-72, but Object 187 was the deeper modernization of the two. Unlike its sibling, Object 187 was actually the result of a company initiative rather than a specific ministry request. This was not very common in the late Soviet era as funding was generally quite tight, but Uralvagonzavod – being the producer of the T-72 – could afford things other plants or design bureaus could not. The design team was led by V.I.Potkin (he'd become famous for the T-90 "Vladimir" that was named after him).
Six prototypes were built, featuring a number of advanced elements compared to the older Soviet tanks, such as a new long 125mm smoothbore gun with a distinctive muzzle brake. The result was an excellent MBT that was, however, never mass-produced due to the 1990s Russian military budget cuts – the Russian army chose a less advanced but cheaper T-90 instead.

This MBT's front is protected by composite armor. Composite armor consists of combined layers of steel and other material and offers excellent protection against HEAT shells and ATGMs. Its steel sides and rear are considerably more vulnerable. The second generation ERA kit offers excellent protection against standard HEAT rounds or warheads, and marginal protection against kinetic rounds. |
