==History== Class: Fire Support Vehicle
Developed: 1999-2006
Service: 2006-2022
Vehicles Built: 142
Operators: USA The Stryker MGS (Mobile Gun System) is named after two separate Medal of Honor recipients, one from the Second World War and one from the Vietnam War. The Stryker platform was based on the MOWAG Piranha III design and was developed specifically to meet the needs of the U.S. Army. The M1128 MGS wasn't supposed to replace any particular vehicle, but to become a part of the so-called Stryker Brigade Combat Teams, which were supposed to be medium-sized rapid response unit deployable anywhere in the world within 96 hours. To that end, the Stryker MGS is supposed to be light, highly mobile, and carries massive firepower in the form of an automatically loaded MBT-class 105mm rifled gun. It is also air-transportable, a necessary pre-requisite for its task, even if they require (unlike other Stryker variants) the use of a C-17 cargo plane. The M1128 was mass-produced between 2006 and 2012 but the vehicle has been (ironically, much like the Sheridan) plagued by controversies and various issues. The Stryker is too light for counter-insurgency operations, offers little protection from mines and RPGs, it's also generally cramped, unstable (due to being too tall) and prone to overheating. With the War on Terror over, the U.S. Army is currently reorganizing itself for more conventional warfare and Stryker Brigade Combat Teams are gradually being phased out with the final deadline being the end of 2022. The M1128 version is expected to be replaced by the winner of the Mobile Protected Firepower contest in the future.
