The Leopard 2A5 variant is a Leopard 2A4, upgraded with a new type of spaced armor as well as with some other partial improvements while retaining its 120mm L/44 smoothbore gun. While not as widely exported as the older Leopard 2 models, it was accepted in service in several European countries. It's worth noting that the vehicle was originally supposed to be even better armored, but this configuration was rejected by the Germans as too costly. It was, however, adopted by Sweden, which is why the Swedish version of the Leopard 2 MBT called Strv 122 is better armored than its German counterpart.
