The Leclerc T40 was first designed as a counterpart to the Russian BMPT series in order to accompany MBTs and defend them from infantry threats they'd have a hard time against. The idea was to convert a number of existing Leclerc tanks to carry a T40 turret armed with a 40mm automatic cannon or even ATGMs. Interestingly enough, the way the vehicle was designed, these conversions would be reversible. The project was, however, never put to production for a number of reasons, including high cost, debatable combat value and poorly developed tactics for such vehicle class. After all, even the Russians weren't keen on accepting their own BMPTs in service. The project was terminated at some point after 2012.
