This vehicle is protected by steel armor only with its hull being able to withstand the fire of small autocannons. However, the protection is enhanced by the presence of the Afganit hard kill APS and the fact that the engine is located in the front, right between the crew and any threat. |

The Kurganets-25 IFV was developed as a cutting edge future replacement to the old BMP series in Russian service. Its name comes from two sources, which its place of origin (Kurgan, a city in the Ural Mountains) and its weight of 25 tons. Unlike the super-heavy T-15 Armata IFV that is meant to serve in elite tank units, the Kurganets is intended for general mechanized infantry use.
The Kurganets is an entirely new design with enhanced protection compared to the BMP series, thanks to its sloped armor, front-mounted engine and the presence of a scaled-down version of the Afganit hard-kill APS. Firepower is provided by a remotely-controlled Bumerang-BM turret, armed with a 30mm autocannon and Kornet guided missiles.
The development of this platform started in the early 2010s and a prototype (first delivered in 2013 or so) was unveiled along with the Armata vehicles during the famous 2015 Victory Day military parade. The original plan was to finish the state trials by 2017 and to start mass-producing the vehicle for Russian use by 2020. However, the program would turn out to be too expensive for Russia.
Kurganets’ service entry was first delayed to 2019, then to 2020 and finally to 2021-2023. In 2020 it was finally decided to effectively freeze the whole program and to upgrade the existing fleet of old BMP-2 IFVs with a new combat module called Berezhok along with further acquisitions of modernized BMP-3s.
It’s worth noting that the version in the game is based on an experimental variant armed with a turret called Epokha. This turret is armed with four weapon systems; a short 57mm autocannon against soft targets, a Kornet ATGM launcher, a 7.62mm machinegun and a brand-new weapon system called Bulat, featuring small but nevertheless guided missiles. The actual purpose of this system is engaging softer targets at longer ranges. The “autocannon” has its ballistic properties somewhere between an actual gun and a grenade launcher, making engaging moving targets at medium-to-long distances difficult. Bulat ATGMs are intended to remedy that.
