The C1 Ariete is a Tier 8 progression Main Battle Tank under Francine De Laroche's dealership.
History[ | ]
C1 Ariete[ | ]
Class: Main Battle Tank
Developed: 1984-1988
Service: 1992+
Vehicles Built: 200
Operators: Italy
Developed by OTO Melara and Fiat Iveco in the 1980s, the Ariete was one of three European "national" tanks of the era alongside the Leclerc and the Leopard 2 MBTs. Of the three, the Ariete is the lightest but, unlike the other two, it has likely never seen any combat, although some vehicles were briefly deployed in Iraq between 2003 and 2006 during Operation Antica Babilonia.
Development began in 1984 and the first prototype was built in 1986 with six more pre-production vehicles built in 1988. The tank was accepted into service in 1992 with the Italian Army ordering 200 Arietes. It's actually unclear when mass-production started exactly. Some sources claim the first vehicles were built as early as 1992 with 18 more built in 1993 and production ran until 1999, others say the vehicle was only built from 1995 onwards and actual production ended in 2002. One thing is for sure, the 200 vehicles were indeed delivered to the Italian military, replacing the older tank variants.
By now, the Ariete is already somewhat obsolete and its poor protection levels don't speak in its favor. The Italians are currently working on a replacement called Ariete Mk.2 but the original Ariete is expected to serve at least until 2025.Italian Military[ | ]
