Between, 1973 and 1988, Poland obtained 1297 license-produced BMP-1 IFVs from Czechoslovakia under the designation BWP-1. By the 1990s, however, the Polish military was well aware of their obsolescence and sought to replace them with something better or, at the very least, upgrade them. The upgraded prototypes received the designation "BWP-1M Puma" and the program ran from the 1990s to 2009. Several turret and hull configurations were tested with poor results, resulting in its termination and the adoption of the Rosomak platform and, most recently, the Borsuk.
