This Russian-developed vehicle, also called "Terminator-2", was designed to accompany tanks and protect them against various non-MBT threats. It combines the benefits of an Armored Fighting Vehicle with the protection and maneuverability of a Main Battle Tank. The BMPT-72, as its name suggests, uses a modified T-72 hull instead of the usual T-90 solution, as a cost-effective solution for countries with obsolete T-72 MBTs, which can then be converted. Additionally, it is armed with an upgraded turret, recognizable by its tilted twin ATGM launchers. The crew was also reduced to 3 men from 5. This vehicle was first shown to public in 2013 but it is unclear what happened afterwards. In 2016, Algeria allegedly ordered 300 of these vehicles, but it doesn't seem that the deal actually went through and the Terminators, approved in 2018 for Russian military service, use T-90 hulls mated with modernized BMPT-72 turrets. Any info about BMPT-72 production must therefore be regarded with suspicion.

The BMPT series of vehicles offers a combination of a MBT-class hull with composite armor, an unmanned turret that takes reduced damage, and a third generation ERA kit, offering excellent protection against standard HEAT rounds or warheads, and partial protection against kinetic rounds and tandem HEAT warheads.
