Class: Infantry Fighting Vehicle
Developed: 1977-1979
Service: 1979+
Vehicles Built: cca 5000
Operators: Soviet Union, Warsaw Pact

Much like the BMD-1P for the Soviet Airborne forces, the BMP-1P was an upgrade program that ran between 1979 and 1983. Even though it overlapped with the new BMP-2 production, it was decided to simply too expensive to re-arm the entire Red Army (let alone the whole Warsaw Pact) with the BMP-2 IFV, making adjustments to the ongoing BMP-1 production a cost-effective solution instead. The goal was mostly to update its anti-tank capabilities by installing a new ATGM launcher. How many vehicles of this specific production sub-type were produced is not known.
