The relationship between BMD-1 and BMD-2 is similar to the one between the BMP-1 and BMP-2 variants. The original 73mm gun was large, but it had serious flaws and was not really effective against tanks. Additionally, one of the lessons learned from the war in Afghanistan was that in order to be effective in cities and mountains, Soviet AFVs need more gun elevation. And, last but not least, when facing the AirLand Battle doctrine, the Soviets found themselves in need of additional anti-helicopter firepower. As a result, the 73mm 2A73 Grom cannon was replaced by a 30mm 2A42 autocannon with excellent gun elevation. The BMD-2 took part in several conflicts along with the Russian Airborne forces, but, unlike the BMD-1, it wasn't really widespread and retained its problematic combat value in asymmetric warfare due to its thin armor.
