==History== Class: Main Battle Tank (Prototype)
Developed: 1981-1983
Service: N/A
Vehicles Built: 3
Operators: N/A The AMX-40 was the first among the third generation French Main Battle Tanks built specifically for export purposes. While it was light, agile and powerfully armed, this Main Battle Tank offered its crew relatively little protection and came at a wrong time, when all the potential customers (the vehicle was mostly intended for Arab countries) already chose their MBTs. Despite heavy marketing since 1983, it remained a prototype only and was quietly terminated in 1990 as obsolete. However, its development provided the GIAT engineers with plenty of experience, which would then be used during the Leclerc development.
